Rock River in Winter – Ice is Nice in the Wisconsin Landscape!
This is another image from my recent morning outing in an early winter fog here in Beloit, Wisconsin. The Rock River runs through the middle of the city and along one side of Big Hill Park, so it's a convenient and scenic spot to look for images in inclement weather.
I darkened this one in processing, simply because I like this mood and look. What do you think? Does this work for you?

This landscape reminds me of a place I visit here locally for frozen lake shots. It is often very cold and barren if there isn’t much light to work with in the mornings. I think this captures that mood well. I like the use of the reverse “S” in the ice.
Thanks, Mark! Sometimes this is just the mood I feel, and I do think this shot captures it pretty well.
I love the mood in this one. The blue tint helps to exemplify the cold feeling that I’m sure existed on this day. It also reminds me of some local lakes here in cold, wintery Nebraska and also reminds me that I need to go visiting some of those lakes soon!
Hi, Derrald –
Thanks! And that’s it exactly – I’m all about ignoring or even amplifying color casts and white balances for that mood. Most people don’t realize that we automatically perform a bit of mental filtering so that we see the snow as white, rather than a shade of blue (or pink, depending on time of day), so sometimes I pump it up a bit to emphasize the point. And, I just like the way it looks. :^D
I hope you get to enjoy those lakes soon!
